Types of Mental Health Professionals

Psychologist

A mental health professional with a doctoral degree in psychology (PhD, PsyD, Ed.D) from an accredited program in psychology. Psychologists are trained to make diagnoses and provide psychological testing, as well as individual and group therapy.

Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)

A clinically trained social worker with a master’s degree in social work from an accredited graduate program. Trained to make diagnoses, and provide individual and group therapy. Also knowledgeable about community resources.

Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC)

A mental health provider with a master’s degree in psychology, counseling, or a related field. Trained to diagnose, and provide individual and group therapy.

Licensed Marital and Family Therapist (LMFT)

A mental health provider with a specialized master’s degree,  and training in marital and family therapy. Trained to diagnose, and provide individual and group therapy to marital and pre-marital couples, and families.

Psychiatrist

A medical doctor (M.D.) who specializes in diagnosing mental health conditions and prescribing medication, when necessary, to help individuals manage their symptoms, usually while the individual also receives therapy.

Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP)

An advanced practice  nurse (Master's degree) with specialized education and training in mental health diagnosis and treatment. Psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners prescribe medication when necessary to help individuals manage their symptoms, usually while the individual also receives therapy
